Sports brands are starting to recognize the needs of athletes with disabilities, who deserve the same opportunities to play. At the recent Paralympic Games in Paris, 4,400 athletes showcased their incredible skills. However, there's still a notable lack of resources, coaching, and proper gear tailored for them. Brands like Decathlon, Salomon, and Zalando are beginning to address these gaps, albeit later than hoped.
Salomon entered the adaptive sports space during the pandemic, collaborating with IMT Mines Albi students to develop a prosthetic running blade. Since then, they’ve expanded to creating snowboard and ski prosthetics for the 2026 Winter Paralympics. Decathlon’s journey began in 2016 after a customer complaint in Italy, leading them to develop a range of adaptive sports equipment, including wheelchairs and winter gear at accessible prices.
Zalando is also making strides, launching a sports collection for people with disabilities and supporting young designers in creating adaptive fashion. Decathlon continues to innovate with universal tracksuits and easy-on shoes, aiming to make sports more inclusive and shift societal perceptions along the way.
